Welcome to Reception.  It was a pleasure meeting so many of you on Thursday 4th September 2020.

The teachers in Reception are Miss Parker and Mrs Wright.  The teaching assistants are: Miss Almond, Mrs Ayaz, Miss Imran and Mrs Naz.

This year we are extremely excited as we have a brand new classroom to explore alongside your children. Reception starts school at 08.50am and finishes at 3:15pm.  Please bring your child to the KS1 gate initially and once building work is completed we will show you where to bring your children in the mornings and where to collect them at the end of the school day.

The children will be doing lots of learning through play.  They will be learning to make friends, take turns, how to share, tidy up, line up and follow the daily routine.

In literacy the children will be learning to sit at the table correctly, how to hold a pencil correctly and how to draw pictures that are recognisable.  The children will be learning to: talk about their pictures, print in the environment, recognise their name, read letters and numbers and also how to form the letters of their name correctly.  The children will also listen to a range of stories such as ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ and ‘Superworm’. Whilst looking at different books, we will discuss what happens in the story, where the story takes place and who the characters are. We will also be learning how to handle books carefully and that we read books, in English, from left to right, top to bottom.  The children will also be exploring a range of nonfiction texts about people who help us such as the police, the dentist and firefighters.

In Mathematics the children will be focusing on the numbers 1-5.  They will learn to recognise these numbers, select the correct number of objects from a large group, explore different ways of representing these numbers and recognise quantities up to 5 without counting them.  We will also be exploring 2D shapes and singing lots of number rhymes such as 5 little ducks and 5 currant buns.

In our topic work the children will be drawing a picture of themselves using the correct colours for skin tone, hair colour and eye colour.  We will also be exploring ways to keep ourselves safe and healthy through the topic ‘People Who Help Us’.  We will be finding out information about people who help us at home, in school, in the local community such as the police, dentist and firefighters.

On Friday afternoons the children will take part in PE lessons to develop a large range of skills such as riding bikes, hopping, jumping, and skipping with our PE teacher Miss Mathers.

The children will need to bring a coat to school every day. Wellies need to be brought into school as we will be exploring the outdoors every day even if it is raining.  During the colder weather, the children will need hats, scarves and gloves.

The children will have the opportunity to use a range of technology such as desktop computer, Ipads, laptops and beebots.

Miss Parker and Mrs Wright will be available at the beginning and end of each day if you have any questions.  However, due to the Coronavirus, VIP sessions will not be taking place this half term.

The children will be bringing homework home every Friday in a pink book.  This needs to be completed and returned to school by Wednesday.

The children will be bringing reading books home with a reading record book.  We ask that you read with your child for just 5 minutes every night and sign your child’s reading record book.  Please see our class pages for information about how you can help your child with their reading at home.  If you read with your child for 3 nights a week or more, your child will receive a dojo point which they are collecting to earn a prize.  An adult will hear your child read at least once a week in school and will only change reading books if their reading record book is signed by someone from home.

Please keep looking at our class pages for more information and to see photographs of your child’s learning throughout the half term.

Thank you for your support and we will look forward to meeting you all very soon.

Miss Parker and Mrs Wright.
