At Ashton West End we have a dedicated group of children who make up our Eco-Council. We have one representative per class from Year 2 – 6 who are democratically elected by their peers. We meet as a group once a half term to discuss our progress and decide what our next actions should be.

 

We began our work in January 2026 with thinking specifically about challenges in our school toilets. The priority was to reduce waste and keep them tidy for others. During lunchtimes we created a series of posters which are specific for the year groups using the bathrooms.

At the end of the 2026 Academic Year we gathered together to ask 3 questions of our school as we start in September 2026. These questions are:

 

Our first meeting in October 2026 will gather our findings together and this will lead us to create a plan for the year. The main priorities will be to support the litter picking team organised by Mr. Barnes, our assistant Site Manager, and to check on recycling going on in our classrooms as we try to reduce the amount of paper we use. 

 

We hope it will be an exciting year on the Eco-Council!
